So, there are plenty of hack poets out there…ones who either can’t get past stating the obvious with a string of cliches or somehow can’t resist the temptation to rhyming ‘love’ and ‘dove.’
That’s me. I’m a hack poet. My dad, on the other hand, is legit. He recently wrote a poem for Sharon (my wife). It’s pretty darn amazing, so I decided to share it here.
An Ode to Sharon
Not just that you love whom you do,
But that he also so loves you,
That I could not, not love you too.
I have seen who you are—
Bulwark and decorator of our walls,
Encourager and healer of one who falls,
Defender when a challenge calls.
I have seen who you are—
In soft dove eyes that soothe our babies’ care,
In twinkling eyes whose joy we all can share,
In sharp steel eyes that do not drop to evil’s stare.
I have seen who you are—
Daughter, sister, and partner to my son,
Mother of my namesake and cherished one.
Your place is earned and etched in stone.
Because, when all the rites were done
And all the vows were through,
You chose to say “I am”, not just “I do”,
Then you belonged to us, and we to you.
Steve
I’ve posted another one of his poems on this blog, here.

What a great poem!
